A 24-hour rule is one of the simplest ways to reduce unplanned spending because it does not require you to say no forever. It only asks you to delay the decision long enough to separate a genuine need from a temporary urge.
You might use the rule for every nonessential purchase over $25, or for all online purchases that were not already planned. Choose a threshold that matches your budget.
Record the item, price, and date. If you still want it after 24 hours and it fits the budget, you can buy it with more confidence.
Ask whether you already own something similar, could borrow it, buy it used, or solve the problem another way.
When you decide against a purchase, add the amount to a running total. Seeing $20 here and $45 there accumulate can make the habit feel rewarding.
Necessary groceries, medicine, emergency repairs, and other true needs do not have to wait. The point is to slow down discretionary spending, not create inconvenience.
