How to Build a Back-to-School Clothes Budget Without Overspending

Back-to-school shopping can become expensive because clothing, shoes and accessories all compete for attention at the same time. A simple clothes budget keeps the shopping focused on what a child actually needs rather than what looks exciting in the store.

Inventory before you shop

Have the child try on current clothes and shoes. Make three groups: fits now, will fit soon, and needs replacing. You may discover that only a few categories need attention.

Separate needs from upgrades

A worn-out pair of school shoes is different from wanting a new style while the old pair still fits. Decide which needs are nonnegotiable and which wants can wait.

Set a total and category limits

Instead of one vague shopping budget, decide how much can go toward shoes, pants, shirts and outerwear. Category limits prevent one expensive purchase from consuming the entire budget.

Buy for the weather you actually have

Do not purchase a full cold-weather wardrobe months early if your child is growing quickly. Buy immediate needs first and add seasonal items closer to when they will be worn.

Mix new, sale and secondhand

Some items may be worth buying new, while jeans, hoodies or jackets can often be found secondhand in excellent condition. Use each source where it makes sense instead of committing to one shopping method.

Give older kids part of the budget

For a teen, explain the total available amount and let them make choices within it. If one premium item matters a lot, they may decide to economize elsewhere.

Keep a small reserve

Do not spend every dollar on the first trip. Leave some room for a surprise dress-code requirement, a growth spurt or an item that was overlooked.
